Can a Postmodern House Feel Cozy? Find Out With Us...

Designing for family always comes with an extra layer of complexity, and maybe a little extra pressure, too. Peter and Alex's mom recently traded her cozy Oregon coast home for something entirely unexpected: a distinctly postmodern house in Portland filled with dramatic windows, soaring light, and bold architectural lines. While the home offered everything she needed in terms of convenience and accessibility, it couldn't have been more different from the traditional and coastal homes she had loved throughout her life.

The challenge wasn't convincing their mom to embrace modern design, but instead, helping a lifelong lover of cozy, comfortable spaces see herself in a house that initially felt more like an architectural statement than a home. As they walk you through the new home and share their renovation plans, Peter and Alex approach the project with equal parts design expertise and family insight, reworking everything from the kitchen and primary suite to the guest rooms and lower-level entertaining spaces. Every decision is filtered through a simple question: how do you make a modern house feel unmistakably like Mom's house?

What emerges is a thoughtful blend of architecture and personality. A much-needed pantry solves one of her biggest functional concerns, while a reimagined primary suite allows her to comfortably live on a single level. Textural finishes, warm materials, and spaces designed for hosting reflect the way she actually lives - surrounded by friends, family, and frequent houseguests. Even the basement is being transformed around her collection of beloved Mid-Century Modern furniture, creating a space that feels both personal and practical.

More than anything, this project offers a glimpse into what happens when designers take on a client they know better than anyone else, and vice versa. Take the tour via the YouTube video above and stay tuned for more updates soon!
