Automation, Outsourcing or Hiring? How to Know What's Right for Your Design Business

If you've ever felt like your design business can't move forward unless you're personally touching every single task, you're not alone. During this month's Daniel House Club Concierge Hour, business strategist Dalia Soles of Design Assisted tackled one of the biggest challenges designers face: becoming the bottleneck in their own business.

Rather than jumping straight to hiring, Dalia encouraged designers to first ask a simple question: Should this be automated, outsourced, or hired? She walked through practical examples of each, from using Dubsado to streamline client onboarding and AI tools like Claude to organize overwhelming inboxes, to outsourcing specialized work like renderings or bookkeeping. One of our favorite takeaways? Outsource a result, not a role. It's a simple mindset shift that makes delegation feel much more approachable.

For designers who are ready to grow a team, Dalia emphasized that successful hiring starts long before posting a job listing. Documenting your workflows, even in a simple Google Doc, creates consistency, makes training easier, and sets new team members up for success. Whether you're looking to reclaim your evenings or prepare your firm for its next stage of growth, her advice was a great reminder that building a business doesn't mean you have to do everything yourself.
