Designing for Timeless Elegance: A Conversation with Gillian Segal
Daniel House Club: Gillian, tell us a little about the inspiration behind your collection with Moe’s Home. What was your starting point?
Gillian Segal: This collection actually started while I was on a trip to Italy for my best friend’s wedding. I was kid-free, which is rare, and I just felt completely immersed in the beauty of my surroundings. I had my sketchbook with me, and as I traveled through different towns, I kept coming back to this idea of old-world craftsmanship—pieces that have been around forever but still feel relevant today.
I stayed at some incredible hotels, including Il Pellicano, and I was so inspired by the way everything felt effortless yet deeply luxurious. The furniture had a soul—it wasn’t about trends, but rather timeless silhouettes and materials that only got better with age. That became the backbone of this collection.
Blending Old & New: A Vintage Aesthetic for Modern Spaces
Daniel House Club: Your collection has a very sculptural, European feel. How did you balance historic influences with modern functionality?
Gillian Segal: I love vintage furniture, and I think every space needs something old. But I also understand that designers need pieces that are not only beautiful but functional. My goal was to create items that feel like they could be antiques—things that could have been passed down—but that work seamlessly in a modern interior.
For example, one of my favorite pieces is the Pelicano Dining Chair. It has this elegant, vintage-inspired metal detailing, but it’s also extremely comfortable and durable. We designed it with performance leather on the seat so it’s easy to clean, making it perfect for family homes.
Similarly, the Getty Side Tables in black granite have a really rich, lived-in feel. They have this beautifully textured, antiqued finish that makes them feel like they’ve been in a home for decades.
Material Matters: Designing for Beauty & Durability
Daniel House Club: You’ve mentioned that durability was a major focus for you. How did that influence your material choices?
Gillian Segal: As a designer—and as a mom—I think about practicality constantly. I want my clients (and anyone who buys this collection) to have pieces that don’t just look good but actually hold up in everyday life.
That’s why we incorporated a lot of performance fabrics, natural stone, and hand-forged iron. For example, the marble we used has these dramatic veins, which help camouflage wear over time. And the black granite has this tactile, pocked finish that naturally hides any imperfections.
Furniture should be livable. My hope is that these pieces feel like they belong in real homes, where people can actually enjoy them without worrying about being too precious.
