Daniel House Club Tours the Richmond Symphony League Showcase House
Daniel House Club recently had the opportunity to help Club member Robin Gahan of Marble Moon Interiors source product for the Richmond Symphony League Showcase House - and we couldn't be more excited about how Robin's designated space, what she calls "Plum Perfect: 1970s Golden Hour," turned out.
In April, our team had the chance to visit Richmond and tour the finished space, which is nothing short of transportive. Robin designed a richly layered family room that channels the soulful glamour of 1970s interiors with remarkable depth, warmth, and personality.
From the moment you step inside, the architecture sets the tone. Soaring knotty pine beams glow overhead in warm honey tones, while a dramatic grey stone fireplace anchors the room. Arched windows frame the surrounding trees like living artwork. Rather than contrast against these original details, Robin leaned into them completely, wrapping the room in deep aubergine walls that amplify the warmth of the wood and create an atmosphere that feels cinematic as the sun sets.
But achieving that mood was anything but simple.
One of the project’s greatest challenges was the original grasscloth wallpaper dating back to the home’s 1987 construction. What began as a standard removal quickly evolved into a weeks-long restoration effort. After days of steaming and scraping, the woven fibers finally came down, but the backing remained stubbornly intact. Instead of compromising, Robin rebuilt the walls from the ground up: oil-based primers, wallpaper liner, multiple coats of high-quality primer, and patient curing periods between every step. Three weeks later, the first panels of Arte International’s Lin wallpaper were finally installed, bringing the room’s signature moody texture to life in a richly dimensional aubergine finish.
At the heart of the room sits the design’s muse: a sculptural vintage sofa in its original upholstery. Its sweeping curved silhouette immediately evokes the kind of relaxed gathering spaces the 1970s perfected - intimate, conversational, and glamorous. Around it, layers of vintage and tactile materials build the story further: a glass coffee table with a structural chrome base, petrified wood side tables (the Neve Side Table from Dovetail), wool rugs in earthy tones, and playful leopard-print armchairs that bring just the right amount of attitude (Chair Hazelwood by Eichholtz). Against the leftmost window behind the sofa is Eichholtz's Bench Del Vale, which features a Chevron fabric that adds even more movement and playfulness to the room.
Throughout the space, every seating moment feels intentional. Near the picture window, vintage swivel chairs flank a sleek chrome console, while a secondary lounge vignette pairs a funky one-arm sofa with Dovetail's Laney hair-on-hide chair and Urbia's Sofia Enamel End Table for a more intimate retreat. The room balances drama with softness at every turn.
Textiles play a starring role, too. Geometric Casamance drapery embroidered with chain-stitched circles and arcs creates movement and graphic tension against the richly textured walls. Velvet ottomans, layered pillows, and plush wool rugs deepen the room’s palette and reinforce its sense of collected comfort.
And then there’s the art.
A carefully curated mix of paintings, textile works, and sculptural pieces by local and emerging artists gives the room its emotional resonance. Rather than functioning as accessories, the personal, layered, and quietly expressive artwork feels woven into the architecture of the space itself.
Lighting completes the atmosphere with equal intention: sculptural brass ceiling fixtures, custom ceramic table lamps glazed in the room’s palette, and statement floor lighting that casts the entire space in a warm, ambient glow. You'll also find Hudson Valley Lighting's Cashel Rechargeable Table Lamps placed in the built-in shelves that surround the fireplace.
For Daniel House Club, touring “Plum Perfect: 1970s Golden Hour” was an inspiring reminder of what happens when thoughtful sourcing meets fearless design vision. Collaborating with Robin Gahan and Marble Moon Interiors on this showcase project was a privilege, and seeing the final result in person made every detail feel even more extraordinary.
