Dinnerware to the Trade

A good service of bone china makes as much of an impact on a meal shared with friends as the right dining table or dining chair. A complete service includes dinner plates, salad plates, bread and butter plates, teacups, and saucers. Soup bowls usually come separately. Several serving bowls, side bowls, and snack bowls are helpful when entertaining large groups, as are appetizer plates and dessert plates. Charger plates elevate the dining experience. They also help keep food warm and catch drips.

Some clients may live very casually and prefer dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe pieces. In contrast, others continue to enjoy the luxury of 24-Karat gold border designs, many of which can go in the dishwasher too. Geometric patterns and abstract watercolor palettes keep things feeling young. It's wise to have multiple styles of dinnerware for different kinds of entertaining. Concentric platinum rim bands never fail to impress, while nesting bowls and plates of varied color provide a communal, inclusive feel that keeps friends coming back again and again.

For kids, melamine ensures breaks won't happen, but they can appreciate nice things too, and it remains customary to gift baby spoons and silver cups to newborns and their parents.
